“Alive – My Soundtrack” – A personal review

*English text below*

Como já aconteceu anteriormente, escrevo sempre algumas linhas sobre o um novo álbum. Esta vez não é excepção, no entanto vou fazê-lo de forma diferente. Em vez de escrever sobre cada música individualmente, uma vez que este formato já fui feito anteriormente e de modo a não correr o risco de me repetir e tornar o review aborrecido, vou escrever de forma mais global e tentar não me alongar muito (o que vai ser um desafio). No entanto, lembro novamente que é apenas a minha opinião pessoal e obviamente não irei falar de termos técnicos, uma vez que não tenho conhecimentos suficientes para isso, nem tão pouco me atreveria a tal. De qualquer das formas, espero que gostem.

Sempre fui fã de bandas sonoras, quer sejam de filmes, séries ou até mesmo de jogos de vídeo e várias vezes pensei se algum dia David iria gravar um álbum desse tipo, por isso estava com alguma curiosidade para ouvir este na sua totalidade. No entanto, este chegou precisamente numa altura particularmente má a nível pessoal. Por esse motivo, demorei algum tempo até conseguir ouvi-lo com clareza. Quando finalmente consegui, foi uma montanha russa de emoções num curto espaço de tempo, pois parecia descrever a minha vida nas últimas semanas, isto se esta pudesse, de facto ter, uma banda sonora (um pouco irónico). Costumo sentir as coisas de forma bastante profunda e por vezes basta uma pequena coisa para despertar as minhas emoções e a música, não sendo a única, é uma delas. Alguns dos temas deste álbum fizeram-me chorar, pois fizeram algo vibrar cá dentro que, de alguma forma, necessitava ser libertado, outros, pelo contrário, fizeram-me rir como uma criança sem preocupações, ao passo que outros me renovaram a esperança e me deram força para continuar e não desistir dos meus sonhos e objectivos, independentemente da volta que o caminho der para os atingir, ou dos obstáculos que possam surgir. Este álbum acabou por ser uma surpresa, pois certamente que não esperava que tivesse este efeito, embora já tenha experienciado o poder curativo da música noutras ocasiões, nunca tal me aconteceu a nível tão pessoal e profundo…

As always, everytime a new album comes out, I write a few words about it and this time is no exception. However, I’m going to do it differently this time. Instead of writing about each track individually, I will write in a more global way and I’ll try to keep it short (that will be a challenge), not only because it’s been done before but also to avoid repeating myself and turn the review a boring thing. However, let me remind you again that this is just my personal opinion and I won’t be writing about technical matters, since I don’t possess enough knowledge about them nor would I even dare to do it. Either way, I hope you enjoy it.

I’ve always been a fan of soundtracks, either from movies, tv series or even vídeo games and I thought, quite a few times, if some day David would ever record something of that kind, for that reason, I was very curious to listen to this álbum as a whole. However, the álbum arrived at a particulary bad time for me, on a personal level. For that reason, it took me a long time until I was able to listen to it with some clarity. When I finally managed it, it was a roller coaster of emotions in short period of time, because it seemed to describe my life in the past weeks, that is if life could actually have a soundtrack (a little ironic). Usually I feel things in deep way and sometimes all it takes is a small thing to awake my emotions, music being one of them. Some of the tracks of the álbum made me cry, because probably made something vibrate inside that needed somehow to be released, others, on the other hand made me laugh like a child with no worries, others still renewed my hope and gave me strength to carry on and don’t give up my dreams and objectives, no matter the twists and turns the path may take to achieve them,n or the obstacles I might encounter. This álbum ended up being a surprise, because I  most certainly did not expect it to have this effect, although I’ve experienced the healing power of music on other ocasions, I never experienced it in such a deep and personal level…

Gardel, Le Pera- Por Una Cabeza

Devo confessar que temia o dia em que teria de escrever algo sobre este tema em particular. A questão aqui é que o acordeão não é de todo um instrumento que aprecie (sem ofensa para quem gosta ou para quem o toca). No entanto, por estranho que possa parecer, gosto bastante deste tema. Talvez porque Martynas toca este instrumento de uma forma completamente diferente do que estava habituada a ouvir e claro, juntando o violino, ainda mais harmonioso me soa. Quem diria que, um dia, haveria de ouvir algo tocado em acordeão e gostar? 😉

I must confess that I feared the day when I would have to write something about this particular song. The point is that the accordion is not at all an instrument that I enjoy listening to (no offense to those who like it or play it). However, as strange as it might seem, I quite like this song. Perhaps because Martynas plays this instrument in completely different way from what I was used to listen and of course, adding the violin, it sounds even more harmonious to me. Who knew that, one day, I would actually listen to something played on the accordion and enjoy it?

Io Ti Penso Amore

Este é mais um dos meus temas preferidos de todo o álbum, mas isso não significa que seja fácil de comentar, pois é um pouco difícil de o dissociar do filme “O Violinista do Diabo” e não queria influenciar o comentário baseando-me nele. A música é lindíssima, embora por vezes possa ser um pouco melancólica, mas não é por isso que gosto menos dela, ou que perca a sua beleza, muito pelo contrário. Para além disso, a voz de Nicole e o som de violino complementam-se lindamente… e é claro que me lembro do referido filme, como poderia não o fazer? LOL.

Here’s another favourite song of mine of this whole album, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to comment it, because it’s a little difficult to disassociate it from the film “The Devil’s Violinist” and I didn’t want to influence the review based on it. The song is simple beautiful, although sometimes it may be a little melancholic, but that doesn’t meant I like it less, or that it loses its beauty, quite the opposite. Also, Nicole’s voice and the violin sound complement each other beautifully… and of course I remember the film, how could I not? LOL.

Zorba’s Dance

Sabem quando acordamos com uma música na cabeça e não há maneira de a fazer sair? Pois foi exactamente isto que me aconteceu hoje. Tenho estado o dia todo a ouvi-la, em sessões contínuas, na minha cabeça. Eu sei que tenho de escrever qualquer coisa acerca dela, mas não era preciso tanto! Hahahahah! Seja como for, quando a ouço (na realidade) dá-me sempre uma certa vontade de rir, pois faz-me lembrar aquelas comédias mudas do início do século XX. Quem sabe se não seria um excelente tema para uma “banda sonora” desse género de filme…

Do you know when we wake up with a song stuck on your head and it refuses to leave? Well that’s exactly what happened to me today. I’ve been hearing this one in my head all day, non stop. I know I have to write something about it, but this is ridiculous! Hahahahah! Anyway, whenever I hear this song (for real) it always makes me laugh, because it reminds me of the silent movie comedies of the begining of the 20th century. Who knows, maybe it would be an great song for a “soundtrack” for this kind of film…

Ain’t No Sunshine

Comentar este tema é um pouco cómico, na medida em que tenho uma certa tendência para o confundir com um outro, “Summertime”, que comentei na publicação anterior. Não são nada parecidas, mas por alguma razão estranha, acontece-me sempre isto (Já se podem rir!). De qualquer das formas, é um dos temas que gosto de ouvir quando preciso de relaxar, mas também quando estou a trabalhar e, confesso que já tive alguns momentos de inspiração ao ouvi-la.

Writing something about this track is a quite funny because I have a tendency to confuse it with another one, “Summertime”, which I already reviewd in the previous post. They’re completely different, but for some unknown reason, it happens all the time (You can laugh now!). Either way, it’s one of the tracks I enjoy listening to whenever I need to relax, but also when I’m working and, I have to confess, I had several inspirational moments while listeting to it.

I Have A Dream

Este é mais um dos meus temas preferidos, quer na sua versão original, quer na de David. Toda a gente tem sonhos e eu não sou excepção, mas faço sempre tudo para os tornar realidade, pois servem de motivação e objectivo no meu dia a dia. Este tema em particular, vem lembrar-me disso mesmo e no dia em que deixarmos de sonhar, deixamos de “viver” e isso é algo que não tenciono deixar que aconteça. Quer sejam sonhos pequenos ou grandes, acredito vivamente que os devemos seguir e acreditar que realmente se podem realizar… e um dia, quando menos esperamos, realizam-se. Por isso, continuem a sonhar e acreditar!

This song is one of my favourites, in both its original version and in David’s. Everyone has dreams and I’m no exception, but I always try everything to make them come true, because they serve as motivation and purpose in my daily life. This song in particular, reminds me of that and when we stop dreaming, we stop “living” and that is something that I don’t intend to let happen. Be it small or big dreams, I truly believe we should follow them and believe they can actually become true… and one day, when we least expect, they happen. So, keep dreaming and keep believing!

Hungarian Dance

Este tema não foi muito fácil de comentar, penso que não estava inspirada e sempre que tentava escrever alguma coisa, nada saía. Mas um dia, em que nem sequer estava a pensar no assunto, estava simplesmente a ouvir (este tema), fez-se luz no meu cérebro e percebi o que me faz lembrar: a cultura cigana, o seu sentido de liberdade e constante viagem, bem como a sua alegria e a sua dança, os seus costumes e modo de vida. É muito curioso perceber que, quando não estamos à procura da resposta, ela surge, por vezes da forma mais improvável.

This track wasn’t very easy to comment, I believe I wasn’t inspired enough and every time I tried to write something, nothing came out. But one day, when I wasn’t even thinking about it, I was simply listening to this song, it hit me and I realised what it reminded me of: the gipsy culture, their sense of freedom and constant travel, as well as their happiness and dancing, their costumes and way of life and how lively they are. It’s rather curious to understand that when we’re not looking for the answers, they simply appear, sometimes in the most improbable ways.

Summertime

Ao contrário do tema anterior, este foi bastante mais simples de comentar, apesar daquilo com que o associo nada ter a ver com o seu nome. Faz-me sempre lembrar os anos 30/40, mais concretamente as histórias policiais da época e toda a sua envolvência, incluindo a música. É verdade que gosto bastante do género, principalmente da escritora Inglesa Agatha Christie e muitos dos seus livros foram exactamente escritos nesse espaço temporal, muitos dos quais foram adaptados para filme ou série de tv. Talvez por isso faça essa associação, mas de qualquer das formas é um tema que gosto bastante, principalmente para relaxar.

Unlike the previous song, this one was a lot easier to comment on, although what I associate it with has nothing to do with its name. It always reminds me of the 30s and 40s, in particular the crime stories of that time and all its surroundings, including the music. It’s true that I really enjoy these genre of stories, in particular by English writer Agatha Christie and many of her book were written precisely during that time frame and later on were adapted to film of tv series. Maybe that’s why I make this association, but either way, it’s a song I really enjoy listening, specialy when I want to relax.

This track was already commented on this review series and for that reason I will not repeat it. However, this one is a remix “variation”, which is interesting, whether you’re a fan of the genre or not.

Little Wing

Quando percebi que este tema fazia parte do álbum, fiquei agradavelmente surpreendida, pois há algum tempo que tinha ouvido uma amostra deste tema, penso que no álbum “Mirror” de Marcus Wolf, e adorei. O tema original é de Jimmy Hendrix, mas esta versão, de alguma forma, transmite serenidade mas também a mensagem “vai tudo correr bem”, não sei como explicar melhor, mas é de facto o que sinto…

When I realised this song was part of the album, I was pleasently suprised, because I heard a sample a while ago, I think on the album “Mirror” by Marcus Wolf and I loved it. The original song is from Jimmy Hendrix, but this version, in a way, gives me a sense of serenity but also the message “everything will be alright”, I don’t know how to explain it better, but that’s what I feel…

November Rain

Este tema é um clássico dos Guns N’ Roses e esta versão é simplesmente lindíssima. Por alguma razão considero-a linda na sua simplicidade, não a nível técnico obviamente, mas no sentido em que me faz lembrar que realmente as coisas mais simples da vida acabam por ser as mais belas e as que realmente importam, sejam elas um pequeno gesto, ou uma palavra agradável. É bom lembrar que essa simplicidade existe e que por vezes, é necessário “pararmos por um momento” e voltarmos a ela…

A classic from Guns N’ Roses and this version is simply beautiful. For some reason I find it beautiful in its simplicity, not on a technical level obviously, but in a sense that it reminds me that the simple things in life are the most beautiful and the ones that matter the most, be it a small gesture or a kind word. It’s a good thing to remember that that simplicity exists and that sometimes it is necessary to “stop for a moment” and go back to it…

Bolero

Esta peça foi originalmente composta por Maurice Ravel e, embora “bolero” seja basicamente um ritmo latino, mais propriamente Cubano, o que esta versão me faz lembrar está muito longe disso. Por algum motivo que desconheço, aquilo me sugere sempre é o o Antigo Egipto, pirâmides, deserto e encantadores de serpentes… talvez por ter ouvido algo semelhante nesse contexto, é verdade que adoro história, em particular tudo o que tenha a ver com o Antigo Egipto e esta versão leva-me a esse tempo que sempre achei fascinante.

This piece was originaly composed by Mauice Ravel and although “bolero” is basically a latin rythm, Cuban to be por precise, what this version reminds me of is far from it. For some reason what is suggests me every single time is the Ancient Epypt, the pyramids, the desert and snake charmers… maybe because I heard something similar in that context, it’s true that I love history, in perticular everything related to the Ancient Egypt and this version takes be back to that time, a time I have always considered fascinating.

“UNLIMITED – Greatest Hits” – A personal review – part 5

Aqui fica a parte 5 do comentário. Da próxima vez passaremos para o CD 2 da versão Deluxe. Esta parte demorou um pouco mais a escrever, pois tenho estado muito ocupada e também estive um pouco doente. De qualquer das formas espero que gostem e obrigada, mais uma vez, por lerem!

Kashmir

Há cerca de uns 3 meses talvez, encontrei um vídeo online em que Jimmy Page estava a dar uma masterclass de guitarra eléctrica a The Edge (U2) e Jack White e a música que ele estava a tocar era exactamente este tema. No início era apenas Jimmy, mas os outros dois logo o acompanharam e posso dizer-vos que foi muito bom! É claro que me lembrei logo desta versão de David, pois é uma das minhas preferidas, aliás, na minha mente comecei a ouvi-las ao mesmo tempo e se o resultado era tão bom dentro da minha cabeça, consigo imaginar quão melhor seria ao vivo (a minha mente é muito criativa LOL). Ainda tenho esperança de, algum dia, poder ouvir David e um ou mais membros de Led Zeppelin tocarem juntos.

About 3 months ago, I’ve found a video online of Jimmy Page giving a masterclass of electric guitar to The Edge (U2) and Jack White and he was playing precisely this song. In the beginning it was just Jimmy, but the other two joined him right after and let me tell you, it was really good! Of course it reminded me of David’s version, which is actually one of my favourites, in fact, in my mind I was listening to both of them at the same time and if the result, inside my head was this good, I can imagine how awsome it would be live (I do have a very creative mind LOL). I still have hope that one day I can listen to David and one or more members of Led Zeppelin playing together.

The Best of Me

Este tema é simplesmente lindo! Não faço ideia quem escreveu o original, nem me lembro sequer de o ter ouvido, mas não tem qualquer problema. Tenho de confessar que, quando o ouvi a primeira vez, as lágrimas escorreram pela cara e ainda escorrem sempre que a ouço com atenção. Na verdade, o melhor de cada um não pode ser medido, nem pesado, nem pode ser encontrado no exterior, nem tão pouco descrito por palavras, está sim no interior da alma e nem sempre seja fácil mostrá-lo, pelas mais diversas razões. Diz-se que os olhos são o espelho da alma… bom, então talvez a música seja a sua linguagem…

This song is simply beautiful! I have no idea who wrote the original, nor do I remember ever listening to it, but that’s not a problem at all. I have to confess that, when I listened to it for the first time, tears streamed down my face and they still do whenever I listen to it . In fact, the best in everyone can not be measured, nor weighted, nor it can be found on the outside, much less described with words, it can be found deep inside the soul and it’s not always easy to show it, for all sorts of reasons. It is said that the eyes are the mirror of the soul… well, maybe music is its language…

Hey Jude 2018

Não me posso considerar uma grande fã dos Beatles, no entanto, esta canção é aquela que me lembro, sempre que alguém menciona a banda. Não é um tema que costumasse ouvir e confesso que estava um pouco apreensiva quanto a escrever alguma coisa sobre ele. Mas isso mudou quando ouvi esta nova versão com mais atenção que, ao contrário do que seria de esperar, se tornou uma das minhas preferidas. Talvez sejam os novos arranjos que lhe dão uma “vibração” diferente, não sei explicar exactamente o que é e, para falar a verdade, nem é necessário, basta ouvir e apreciar. Para mim, funciona e adoro!

I don’t think of myself as a big fan of the Beatles, however, this song is the always the one I think about whenever someone mentions the band. It’s not a song I usually listened to and I confess I was a little apprehensive about writting something about it. But all that changed when I listened to this version more carefully, which, contrary to what would have been expected, it became one of my favourites. Maybe it’s the new arrangements that give it a different “vibe”, I can’t exactly explain what it is and, to tell the truth, that’s not even necessary, we just need to listen and enjoy. For me, it works and I love it!

“UNLIMITED – Greatest Hits” – A personal review – part 4

Smells Like Teen Spirit

Este tema, para mim não é muito fácil de comentar, pelo simples facto de não ser grande fã dos Nirvana. Já ouvi alguns dos seus temas obviamente, mas não posso dizer que me identifique com eles. No entanto, isso não acontece com a versão de David, pois por alguma razão gosto bastante dela. Parece um pouco contraditório, é verdade, mas é o que acontece. Posso mesmo dizer que se não fosse esta versão, as probabilidades de ouvir Nirvana seriam mínimas e isso posso, de certa forma agradecer a David, pois fez-me ouvir este tema de uma perspectiva totalmente diferente, ao ponto de gostar de um tema que, de outra forma não ouviria.

This song isn’t very easy for me to comment, simply because I’m not a big fan of Nirvana. I’ve listened to several of their songs obviously, but I can’t say I can identify myself with them. However, that doesn’t happen with David’s version, because for some reason I really like it. It does sound contradictory, but it’s the truth, it really is what happens. I can honestly say that if it wasn’t for this version, the odds of listening to Nirvana would be minimal and for that, in a way, I have to thank David, because he made me listen to it in a totally different perspective, to the point of enjoying a song I would not otherwise listen.

She’s Out Of My Life

Mais um tema de Michael Jackson, o qual não me recordo da versão original (LOL), mas não tem qualquer problema, pois na realidade, quando o ouço associo a uma coisa completamente diferente. Quero com isto dizer que, por algum motivo, faz-me lembrar um tema de algum filme animado da Disney. Não me estou a referir a alguma história em particular, mas sim ao facto de me parecer apropriado para tal. Penso que já referi anteriormente que sou fã da Disney e de bandas sonoras, talvez por isso me tenha lembrado de tal. Disney para mim não é apenas sinonimo de crianças, mas é também ter alguns valores presentes, bem como manter a nossa criança interior viva e ver, por vezes, as coisas com a simplicidade delas, mesmo em adultos. Seja como for, é um tema lindíssimo!

This one is another song from Michael Jackson, which I can’t remember its original version (LOL), but actually not a problem because in reality, when I listen to it, I associate it with something completely different. By this I mean that for some reason it reminds me of a song from a Disney animated film. I’m not referring to a particular story, but rather to the fact that, for me, it seems appropriate. I think I mentioned before that I’m a fan of Disney and of soundtracks, so maybe that’s why it reminded of such. Disney for me isn’t just a synonym of children, but also of keeping some values present, as well as keeping our inner child alive and, sometimes looking at things with their simplicity, even as adults. Either way, this song is simply beautiful!

Summer

Eis uma grande versão de uma peça de um dos meus compositores preferidos, Antonio Vivaldi. A primeira recordação que tenho de ouvir alguma coisa deste compositor, penso que teria uns 7 ou 8 anos. Quando era criança, havia, na altura, uns livros de histórias que vinham acompanhados por uma cassete de áudio onde a podíamos ouvir também. Nessas histórias narradas, era costume terem música, tal como uma banda sonora. Na única história que me lembro, havia um baile e a música era de Vivaldi, não me consigo lembrar qual exactamente mas pertencia às  “Quatro Estações”. Na altura, não fazia ideia quem era o referido compositor, só anos mais tarde é que descobri quem era e, sempre que ouço alguma destas “Quatro Estações”, mesmo esta versão de David que é, de certa forma, mais modernizada, a minha mente leva-me sempre a este momento da minha infância. Escusado será dizer que é uma das minhas preferidas do álbum.

Here’s a great version of a piece by one of my favourite composeres, Antonio Vivaldi. The first time I remember listening to something of this composer I was about 7 or 8 years old. When I was a child, there were these books that came with audio cassettes of the same story. In these audio stories, they usually had music, just like a soundtrack. In the only story I remember, there was a ball and the music playing was from Vivaldi, I can’t actually remember which one, but I know it was part of “The Four Seasons”. At the time I had no idea who the composer was, it was years later that I did and everytime I hear any of “The Four Seasons”, even David’s version that is, in a way, more modern, my mind always take me back to that childhood moment. Needless to say it’s one of my favourites of the album.

Cry Me A River

“UNLIMITED – Greatest Hits” – A personal review – part 3

Musica É

Se não estou em erro, este tema é Italiano e penso que nunca ouvi a versão original e, mais um vez, não o quis fazer para não me influenciar. Tal como o título e o próprio tema sugerem, música é… bom, para mim é, a um nível instrumental e sem qualquer tipo de letra, uma linguagem universal, que aproxima de certa forma, todos os seres, independentemente das particularidades de cada um deles. Mas no entanto, é ao mesmo tempo, algo muito pessoal, pois ao ouvir mesma coisa, cada individuo pode sentir coisas completamente diferentes e é isso que a torna tão especial. Podemos, através da música, contar uma história, ou simplesmente ter uma conversa, mas também é muito mais do que isso, a música consegue expressar as emoções mais profundas da nossa alma, sejam elas boas, menos boas, muito mais do que qualquer língua e, usando as palavras de Helen Keller: “As coisas mais bonitas e melhores do mundo não podem ser vistas, nem mesmo tocadas, têm de ser sentidas com coração”, tal como a própria música.

If I’m not mistaken, this is an Italian song and I don’t think I ever heard the original version, and again, I didn’t want to avoid being influenced by it. Like the its title and the song itself, music is (English translation of the title)… well, for me on an instrumental level, without any sort of lyrics, is an universal language that, in a way can bring all beings together, regardless of their individual particularities. However, at the same time, it’s something very personal too, because while listening to the very same thing, every individual can feel very different things and that is what it makes it so special. We can, through music, tell a story or simply have a conversation, but it can do more than that, music can express the deepest emotions of our soul, either good or not so good, much more than every other language can and using the words of Hellen Keller: “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, they must be felt with the heart.” just like music itself.

Viva La Vida

Toccata (2018)

Em todos os álbuns há pelo menos um momento “UAU!” e de completa surpresa. Quando ouvi este tema, com os novos arranjos, pela primeira vez, tive um desses momentos e a sensação que tenho é que fiquei sem respirar durante a música toda e de queixo caído. No final pensei literalmente “Quê… ? Como…? O que é que…?”, fiquei mesmo sem palavras e, como podem ver, o meu discurso estava a fazer imenso sentido. Quando “recuperei” as minhas faculdades mentais e comecei a raciocinar outra vez, apercebi-me que esta nova versão, com os novos arranjos são simplesmente brilhantes! David e Franck van der Heijden são, de facto, excelentes naquilo que fazem, sinceramente estou a ficar sem adjectivos que classifiquem o quão bom o seu trabalho e este tema é mais uma prova disso. Claro que se tornou, instantaneamente numa das minhas preferidas.

On every album there’s at least one “UAU!” moment and a complete surprise. When I first heard this song, with the new arrangements, I had one of those moments. What I fetl was like if I had stop breathing throughout the whole song and that my jaw was hanging open. When it was over I was thought “What…? How…? What was…?, I was speachless and as you can see, making a lot of sense too. After recovering all my mental abilities and started thinking straight again, I realised that this new version, with the new arrangements are simply brilliant! David and Franck van der Heijden are, in fact, excelent at what they do and I’m honestly running out of adjectives that can express how good their work is and this song is just one more proof of it. It became one of my favourites, instantly.

Nothing Else Matters

Esta é mais uma das minhas preferidas e também um clássico dos Metallica. Já ouvi várias versões deste tema, quer instrumental quer com voz, mas esta, sem contar com a original, continua a ser a que mais gosto, ao ponto de durante alguns anos, este tema ter sido o toque do meu antigo telemóvel. Para mim, esta versão é um pouco mais “doce” que a original, talvez por ser instrumental, mas também talvez por causa do violino e da orquestra, não sei precisar, mas é o que faz gostar tanto dela, é simplesmente linda.

This song is another one of my favourites and also another classic from Metallica. I’ve heard so many versions of this song, either instrumental or not, but this one is still the one I like the most, not counting the original one, to the point where it was, for years, the ringtone of my old phone. For me, this version is a little more “sweet” than the original, probably because it’s instrumental, or maybe because of the violin and the orchestra, I’m not really sure, but that’s why I like it so much, it’s just beautiful.

The Show Must Go On (2018)

Um grande tema dos Queen e, novamente, um dos meus preferidos, penso até que foi dos primeiros que ouvi da banda. É, de certa forma, curioso estar a escrever este comentário no mês do falecimento de Freddie Mercury e também no mês de estreia do filme “Bohemian Rapsody”. A versão de David é, mais uma vez, brilhante. Já o disse anteriormente, mas volto a dizer, David consegue transmitir com o violino a essência de Freddie, quase como que se fosse a voz deste último e, pelo facto de ser uma versão instrumental (excepto o refrão), consegue ter um enfoque maior nas emoções uma vez que não tem a limitação da linguagem. O que simboliza para mim é, não importa quantas vezes tenhamos de cair, quantas vezes tenhamos de nos reinventar, temos e podemos sempre nos levantar e continuar. Há um sentimento de esperança que depois da tempestade vem a bonança e que realmente temos força interior suficiente para continuar a nossa jornada pessoal.

A great song from Queen and, again, one of my favourites, I think it might have been one of the first I ever heard from the band. It’s curious in away, writting this review on the anniversary month of Freddie Mercury’s passing and also the month of the film “Bohemian Rapsody” premiere. David’s version is, again, simply brilliant. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, David really conveys Freddie’s essence, almost like his voice and by the fact it’s an instrumental version (except the chorus) it has a greater focus on the emotions since it does not have the limitation of the language. For me it means, that no matter how many times we fall, or how many times we have to reinvent ourselves, we have and we can always get up and carry on. There’s a feeling of hope that after the storm, the sun will shine again and that we really do have enough inner strength to go on with our personal journey.

Air (Accoustic version 2018)

A primeira vez que me lembro de ouvir esta peça foi num filme, devia ter uns 7 ou 8 anos. O engraçado é que não me consigo lembrar de que filme se tratava, penso que era um dos de James Bond mas não tenho a certeza. Lembro-me vagamente que a cena não tinha diálogo e envolvia água. O que é interessante, é notar que não me lembro de praticamente nada do filme em questão, apenas da música, o que para mim demonstra o quão importante ela é numa cena. Para além disso, este tema tem um efeito calmante e relaxante, de tal forma que, ultimamente ouço-o antes de dormir. Mas não é só pelo facto de ser acústico que tem esse efeito, é também pela “energia” que transmite e isso é algo que, do meu ponto de vista, está relacionado com quem a toca, pois não são apenas notas musicais é muito mais do que isso, mas no entanto, não consigo encontrar palavras para o descrever e, na verdade nem é necessário, basta ouvir e sentir.

The first time I remember hearing this piece was in a film and I was about 7 or 8 years old. The funny thing is I can’t remember which film was, I believe it was one of the old James Bond ones, but I’m not sure. I vaguely remember that there was no dialogue and the scene involved water. The interesting thing is realizing that I don’t remember anything about the film, apart from the music, which demonstrates how importante music is in a scene. Also, this piece has a soothing and calming effect, in the way that I’ve been hearing it before going to sleep. But it’s not because it’s an accoustic version that has that effect, it’s also because of the “energy” that comes from it and that is something, from my perspective, related to whom plays it, because it’s not just musical notes, it’s much more than that, but I can’t really find words to describe it, in fact there’s actually no need for that, we just have to listen and feel.

The 5th

Penso que este tema foi dos primeiros que ouvi de David e também a primeira “experiência crossover“, por assim dizer, pois foi a primeira que ouvi que realmente junta clássico e rock. A 5ª Sinfonia de Beethoven é uma das minhas preferidas, tal como o próprio compositor e esta versão é simplesmente de génio, aliás, fiquei mesmo de queixo caído quando a ouvi a primeira vez (tem tendência a acontecer), pois até então nunca tinha ouvido nada do género. Lembro-me que na altura em que comprei o álbum “Rock Symphonies”, era e ainda é, uma das minhas preferidas, aliás, foi o meu primeiro álbum de David e passava o tempo todo a ouvir este tema, especialmente se estava a conduzir, ou a fazer alguma coisa que requeresse inspiração, ainda continuo a fazê-lo, não só com este tema em particular, mas com muitos outros. Posso mesmo dizer que foi este tema que me levou a mostrar, a alguns amigos, o trabalho de David, pois tinha de partilhar de tão bom que era (e é)! Se os meus amigos gostaram? Bem, posso dizer-vos que não só gostaram como acabei por comprar 4 cópias do referido álbum, LOL.

I think this was one of the first songs I heard from David and also my first actual “crossover experience”, so to speak, because it was the 1st one I heard that really combines classical and rock. Beethoven’s 5th Symphony is one of my favourites as it is its composer, and this version is simply genious, my jaw literally dropped when I heard it the first time (it tends to happen), because up until that moment I have never heard anything like it. I remember when I bought the “Rock Symphonies” album, was and still is one of my favourites, in fact, that was the first David’s album I purchased and I used to listen this song all the time, specially while driving or doing something that required inspiration, I still do it, but of course not just with this track in particular, but with many others. I can actaully say that this song was what made me show David’s work to some friends, I just had to share it because it was (and is) so good. Did my friends like it? Well, I can tell you that not only loved it I ended up buying 4 copies of the said album, LOL.

Asturias (Accoustic version 2018)

Esta é mais uma das minhas preferidas, embora não me lembre sequer de ter ouvido alguma vez a versão original. De qualquer das formas, faz-me sempre lembrar o Flamenco que, para não conhece é uma forma de arte baseada nas várias tradições da música folclórica do sul da Espanha, cujas origens remontam às culturas cigana e mourisca, e que inclui música, canto, dança, sapateado e palmas. Aliás, é mesmo essa a imagem que surge na minha mente, sempre que ouço este tema, um conjunto de músicos e de bailarinos a dançar flamenco. Para terem uma ideia do que estou a falar, vejam esta imagem. Seria interessante ver esses mesmos bailarinos, com o seu estilo particular de dança, dançarem ao som deste tema.

This one is another favourite of mine, although I don’t remember if I ever heard the orginal version. Either way, it always reminds me of Flamenco which, for those of you who are familiar with it, it’s a form of art based on various traditions of folk music from southern Spain, whose origins go back to the Gypsy and Moorish cultures, which includes music, singing, dancing, tap dancing and handclaping. In fact, that’s exactly the image that appears in my mind every time I listen to this track, several musicians and dancers dancing flamenco. To have an ideia of what I’m talking about, check this image. It would be really interesting to watch those flamenco dancers, with their particular way of performing, dancing to this track.

“UNLIMITED – Greatest Hits” – A personal review – part 1

Tal como prometido, aqui vai a primeira parte do review do álbum “UNLIMITED – Greatest Hits” Deluxe Edition (entra em pânico ao olhar para a lista de temas LOL). Como mencionei numa publicação anterior, alguns temas já foram comentados noutras ocasiões e, para evitar repetições, apenas farei um link para os mesmos quando se justificar. Lembro ainda, que são apenas comentários pessoais acerca do que sinto ou do que me faz lembrar quando ouço determinado tema. Não vou comentar nada a nível técnico pois não tenho nem conhecimento, nem autoridade para tal. Espero que gostem de ler e obrigada 🙂 !

As promised, here’s the part 1 of the “UNLIMITED – Greatest Hits” Deluxe Edition album review (panics when realising how long the track list is LOL). As I mentioned on a previous post, some of the songs have already been reviewed before and, to avoid repetition, I’ll link them to their reviews when necessary. Also, let me remind you that these will be personal comments about what I feel or what it reminds me of when listening to certain songs. I will not comment anything on a technical level because I have neither the knowledge nor the authority to do so. I hope you enjoy reading and thank you 🙂 !

Smooth Criminal (Acoustic Version 2018)

Um clássico de Michael Jackson e também uma das minhas preferidas. Já ouvi várias versões deste tema e esta, para mim é uma das melhores, provavelmente por ser acústica, onde podemos ouvir o violino com mais clareza, por assim dizer. É-me quase impossível ouvi-la sem me lembrar do artista que era Michael Jackson, não só como músico, mas também como bailarino. Posso dizer que cresci a ouvi-lo e, lembro-me quando era mais nova, o que mais me impressionava era a forma como este dançava, mas também como todos os seus vídeos eram quase como que um pequeno filme, por isso, sempre que ouço alguma coisa dele, em particular temas dos anos 80, levam-me de volta à infância.

A classic from Michael Jackson and also one of my favourites. I’ve heard several versions of this song and this one is, for me, one of the best, probably due to the fact it’s accoustic and we hear the violin more clearly, so to speak. For me it’s almost impossible to hear it and not to think of the great artist Michael Jackson was, not only as a musician, but also as a dancer. I grew up listening to him and I remember, when I was younger, that what really impressed me the most was the way he danced and also his music videos, they were like short films, for that reason, every time I hear anything from Michael Jackson, in particular the 80’s songs, they take me back to childhood.

He’s a Pirate (“Pirates of the Caribbean”)

Este tema traz boas memórias… foi primeira música que ouvi tocada por David, pois até àquele momento nem sequer sabia da sua existência. Foi num vídeo de um concerto ao vivo em Berlim (que mais tarde descobri ser de um DVD) e pode dizer-se que foi “por acaso”. Estava a fazer uma pesquisa, certa noite, no YouTube quando encontrei algumas bandas sonoras de filmes tocadas por orquestras. No meio da pesquisa, num pequeno vídeo de sugestão do Youtube, estava o nome “Pirates of the Caribbean” e, como sou grande fã do filme e do compositor da banda sonora original, Hans Zimmer, fui ver do que se tratava. Devo dizer-vos que fiquei sem palavras e com o queixo completamente caído e lembro-me de ter pensado “O que é ISTO? É simplesmente de génio!”. Por causa disso, fiquei acordada até às 3h da manhã a ouvir o que encontrei tocado por David. Não consigo descrever exactamente o que senti, mas foi mais ou menos um misto de surpresa, choque e alegria… tudo ao mesmo tempo. De certa forma, mudou a muitos aspectos da minha vida.

This song brings back good memories… it was the very first song I heard played by David, because up until that moment I had no idea he existed. It was a video of a concert in Berlin (that later I found out it was part of a DVD) and it as a little by “accident”. One night, I was doing a research on YouTube and found a few videos of movie sound tracks played by orchestras. At some point, in a small YouTube video suggestion I saw the name “Pirates of the Caribbean” and, since I’m a huge fan of the film and its original sound track composer, Hans Zimmer, I went to check it. I have to tell you, I was speachless and my jaw literally droped and I remember thinking “What is THIS? It’s just genious!”. Because of that I stayed up until 3am listening to everything I found played by David. I can’t really describe what I felt exactly, but it was more or less a mix of surprise, shock and happiness… all at once. In a way, it changed a lot of aspects in my life.

Leningrad (2018)

O tema original é de Billy Joel e, embora não esteja muito familiarizada com todo o seu trabalho, esta canção é-me conhecida, no entanto, fiz questão de não relembrar a original antes de comentar a versão de David, pelo simples motivo de não querer que a letra da mesma me influenciasse. Não sei qual foi a inspiração ou o motivo que levou Billy Joel a escrevê-lo mas, sei que quando ouço a versão de David, por alguma razão sinto uma certa nostalgia e alguma saudade, misturadas com tristeza, mas não sei exactamente do quê. No entanto, ao mesmo tempo, há também uma alegria e uma certeza de que, do que está para vir, o que quer que seja… está certo. Se isto faz algum sentido? Provavelmente, ao nível racional não, mas ao nível do coração… faz todo o sentido.

The original song is from Billy Joel and although I’m not very familiar with all his work, I recognise it somehow. However, I’ve made sure not to listen to the original before commenting David’s version, just because I didn’t want the lyrics to influence me in anyway. I have no idea what was the reason or the inspiration that made Billy Joel to write it, but I do know that when I listen to David’s version, for some reason I feel a certain nostalgia and longing, mixed with sadness, but of what I don’t know. However, at the same time, there’s a happiness and a certainty that whatever may come, no matter what it is… it’s just right. Does it make any sense? Probably not, on a racional level, but on the heart’s perspective… it makes all the sense in the world.

Walk This Way (Accoustic Version)

O comentário a este tema surgiu de forma um pouco inesperada, pois por alguma razão, só me faz lembrar o oeste americano, cowboys, cavalos selvagens, planícies e também de espírito livre. Não sei de onde surgiu esta imagem, mas provavelmente devido ao facto de ser um versão acústica e haver algo no ritmo, juntamente com a guitarra clássica e o violino que me fizeram lembrar isto. Sempre associei as planícies e os cavalos a liberdade e facto destes terem tido muita importância na minha vida, pois pratiquei equitação durante mais de 20 anos, a ligação entre cavalo e cavaleiro é única e a sensação que se tem de liberdade é algo indescritível, especialmente quando podemos galopar à vontade. É esta liberdade que, de alguma forma, me lembro de cada vez que ouço este tema.

This comment came up in an unexpect way because, for some reason, it reminds me of the american wild west, cowboys, wild horses, plains and free spirit. I don’t know where this idea come from, but probably due to the fact it’s an accoustic version and there’s something in the rythm, along with the classic guitar and the violin that made me think about it. I’ve always associated the plains and the horses to freedom and the fact these had such an importan role in my life, I’ve practiced horse riding for more than 20 years, the connection between the horse and the rider is unique and the sence of freedom is indescribable, specially if you can galop at will. It’s this freedom that, in a way, I remember whenever I hear this song.

“Rock Revolution” – A personal review – Part 6

Finalmente chegámos à parte 6 e última deste comentário. Demorou um pouco mais que o normal, pois tenho estado muito ocupada e não queria escrever uma coisa a correr 😉 . Quero agradecer a todos por me acompanharem nesta jornada pelos 18 temas do álbum “Rock Revolution”, espero que tenham gostado de ler o review tanto quanto eu gostei de o escrever. Sem mais demoras, aqui ficam os últimos 3 temas. Muito obrigada!

We’ve finally reached part 6 and last of this review. It took me a little longer than usual, because I’ve been really busy and I didn’t want to write something in a rush 😉 . I want to thank everyone for for accompanying me on this journey through the all the 18 tracks of the album “Rock Revolution”, I hope you’ve enjoyed reading the review as much as I enjoyed writing it. Without further delay, here are the last 3 songs. Thank you so much!

Baroque Reinvention

A peça original foi escrita por Johann Sebastian Bach. Quando ouvi a versão de David imaginei, quase de imediato, que poderia ser uma banda sonora de um filme de acção do século XVIII, mas com um “sabor” a século XXI, (se é que isto faz algum sentido). Sendo fã de bandas sonoras e considerando que sem elas qualquer filme teria menos de metade de interesse, a minha mente criou uma sequência de cenas de acção, tendo como banda sonora este tema, onde envolve claro, perseguições e cenas de luta e algum drama à mistura. Não faço ideia porque é que me fez criar um filme mental, nunca me aconteceu antes, mas a verdade é que a música tem a capacidade de estimular o nosso cérebro e criatividade de uma forma impressionante.

The original piece was written by Johann Sebastian Bach. When I heard David’s version I imagined, almost immediately, it could be the soundtrack of an 18th century action movie, with a 21st century twist (if that makes any sense at all). Being a soundtracks fan and considering that without them any movie would be less interesting, my mind created several action scenes that would have this piece as their soundtrack, involving of course, fight sequences and pursuits and a few dramas in between. I have no idea why it made me create a mental movie, it never happened to me anything like this before. But the truth is music has the ability to stimulate our brain and creativity in some impressive ways.

One Moment In Time

Esta é uma daquelas músicas que me faz chorar, seja qual for a versão que ouça, seja a original de Whitney Houston, seja a de David. No entanto, é esta última que toca naquele ponto cá dentro, que faz com que as lágrimas escorram pela cara a baixo sem as conseguir controlar. É simplesmente linda… e o facto de ser tocada no violino, consegue ir ainda mais fundo, até àquele cantinho secreto da alma onde guardamos as maiores alegrias, mas também as maiores tristezas e é quando ela lá chega que a onda de emoções enche o coração e verte em forma de lágrima…

This is one of those songs that makes me cry, no matter what version I hear, be it the Whitney Houston’s original, or David’s. However, it’s the latter that really touches that spot inside, that makes the tears streaming down my face without being able to control them. It’s simply beautiful… and the fact that it’s played in the violin, it can reach even deeper, to that secret corner of the soul where we keep our greatest joys, but also our greatest sorrows and that is when the wave of emotions fills up our heart and it sheds in a form of a tear…

Nah Neh Nah

Este é um daqueles temas que me deixa muitíssimo bem disposta e devo confessar que, a primeira vez que ouvi desatei a rir, no melhor sentido claro. Diria que é impossível não ficar com um sorriso quando se ouve este tema. Não conheço o trabalho de Vaya Con Dios, que é a quem a original pertence, pelo que apenas ouvi a versão de David e desde logo que me fez lembrar os anos 20 e 30 e a época do cinema mudo, onde era comum o protagonista ser perseguido por dezenas de polícias das formas mais hilaritantes, mas ao mesmo tempo com uma pitada de música cigana. Seja como for, o resultado final é brilhante e consegue mesmo melhorar o estado de espírito e deixar-nos de bom humor durante todo o dia 🙂 .

This is one of those songs that leaves me in a good mood and I have to confess that, the first time heard it I started laughing, in a good way of course. I could say it’s almost impossible not to have a smile on your face while listing to it. I’m not familiar with the Vaya Con Dios work, to whom the original song belongs to, I just hear David’s version and right from the beginning it reminded my of the 1920’s – 1930’s and the silent movies era, where it was common to see the main character being chased down by dozens of police officers in the most hilarious ways, but at the same time with a little gypsy music flavor. Anyway, the final result is brilliant and it can really enhance our state of mind and in a good mood throughout the day 🙂 .

“Rock Revolution” – A personal review – Part 5

Duel Guitar Vs. Violin

Apesar do título deste tema implicar um duelo, nunca vi, ou melhor, ouvi, dessa forma. Para mim, é mais como um diálogo entre dois instrumentos, do que propriamente uma “luta” entre eles. Mas não só, é também uma conversa entre dois amigos, dois músicos brilhantes que comunicam entre si através do respectivo instrumento. Apesar da “conversa” começar com David e Franck, os restantes músicos juntam-se ao diálogo, tal como acontece quando estamos num grupo de amigos a conversar. Tal só vem demonstrar que, realmente a música é uma língua a qual, na minha opinião é bem mais abrangente que qualquer outra, pois consegue exprimir sentimentos e emoções como nenhuma outra. É mesmo uma linguagem Universal!

Although its title implies a duel, I never saw it (heard it) that way. For me, is more like a dialogue between two instruments, rather than a “fight”. But that’s not all, it’s also a conversation between two friends, two brilliant musicians that communicate with one another through their instruments. Although the “conversation” starts with David and Franck, the remaining musicians join them, just like when we chat with a group of friends. That shows that music really is a language which, in my opinion is far more vast that any other, because it can express feelings and emotions like no other. It truly is an Universal language!

Bohemian Rhapsody

Já o disse antes e volto a dizer, que sou fã dos Queen desde pequena, aliás foi dos primeiros CDs que os meus pais me compraram e desde que ouço as versões de David, sempre imaginei o violino como sendo a versão instrumental da voz de Freddie Mercury (se é que isto faz sentido). Apesar disso, confesso que não foi muito fácil escrever sobre este tema, nada mesmo. Ao fazê-lo foi como tentar entrar na mente de Freddie Mercury e compreender a complexidade do génio artístico que era e ao mesmo tempo perceber que, em parte, esta canção poderia ser um reflexo da sua personalidade. Não sei se o era o não, mas o facto de querer escrever sobre ela, fez-me ouvi-la de outra perspectiva e a isso posso agradecer a David e à banda, pois graças aos seus arranjos e interpretações, fizeram-me ouvir um clássico de uma forma completamente diferente.

I’ve said before and I’ll say it again, I am a Queen fan ever since I was child, in fact it was one of the first CDs my parents bought me and ever since I’ve been hearing David’s versions, I’ve always imagined the violin as an instrumental version of Freddie Mercury’s voice (if that makes since). Despite that, I confess it wasn’t easy to write about it, not at all. Doing it was like trying to get into Freddie Mercury’s mind and understand the complexity of the artistic genius he was and at the same time realizing that, in part, this song could be a reflection of his own personality. I have no idea if it was or not, but the fact of wanting to write about it, made me listen to it from a new perspective and that is something I should thank David and his band for, because thanks to their arrangements and interpretations, made me listen to classic from a whole new way.

Earth Song

Sempre achei esta canção como sendo uma mensagem de esperança. O ser humano é extremamente violento e destruidor e é capaz das maiores atrocidades, mas pode, ao mesmo tempo, ter uma grande compaixão, solidariedade e, acima de tudo, bondade para com o próximo, seja ele humano, animal ou planta. Faz-nos acreditar que ainda há esperança no Homem e que, bastam pequenas coisas para podermos mudar, para melhor, o mundo em que vivemos. Na sua versão, David manteve a sua essência mas claro, deu-lhe um toque pessoal, quase como que acrescentando o que sente ao que Michael já tinha “dito”. Não sei se foi essa a intenção de Michael Jackson quando escreveu a canção, nem tão pouco sei qual o sentimento que tinha/tem quando David a toca, é apenas o que sinto quando ouço.

I always thought this song as a message of hope. The human being is extremely violent and capable of the worst atrocities, but at the same time it can have great compassion, solidarity and, above all, goodness towards others, be it human, animal or plant. It makes us believe that there is still hope in Man and that small things are enough to change, for the better, the world we live in. In his version, David kept the songs original essence, but of course he gave it his own personal touch, almost as if adding what he feels to what Michael had already “said”. I do not know if that was Michael Jackson’s intention when he wrote this song, nor do I know what David felt/feels when he plays it, it’s just what I feel when I listen to it.

“Rock Revolution” – A personal review – Part 4

Concerto No. 1

A primeira vez que ouvi esta peça (de Tchaikovsky) devia ter uns 4 ou 5 anos. Na altura, havia um vinil de uma senhora chamada Ana Faria com o título “Brincado aos Clássicos” que, usando peças de compositores clássicos, acrescentaram a letra transformando a peça original numa canção para crianças, com a particularidade que cada canção tinha como título um nome próprio. A verdade, é que adorava esse vinil e ainda hoje o tenho e me lembro claramente de o ouvir. A canção correspondente a esta peça (Concerto No.1) chama-se “Pedro” e se tiverem curiosidade em ouvir, podem fazê-lo aqui (em Português). Ao ouvir a versão de David, fiquei com um enorme sorriso pois lembrou-me essa época, apesar dos arranjos serem completamente diferentes. Mais uma vez, obrigada a David e à banda, por mais uma memória de infância 😀 !

The first time I heard this piece (by Tchaikovsky) I must have been 4 or 5 years old. At the time, there was this vinyl of a lady called Ana Faria with the title “Playing with Classics” (“Brincando aos Clássicos”) that used orginal pieces by classical composers, added the lyrics and transformed them into songs for children, with a curious detail that every song’s title was a children’s name. In truth, I loved that vinyl and I still have it today and I clearly remember hearing it. The song they used for this piece (Concerto No.1) is called “Pedro” and if you’re curious about how it sounds, please click here (the lyrics are in Portuguese). When I heard David’s version, I had a huge smile on my face because it reminded me of that time, although the arrangement’s are completely different. Thank you, once, again to David and his band for another childhood memory 😀 !

The Well Dressed Guitar

Sinceramente não conhecia a versão orginal, que pertence aos “Deep Purple”, até começar a escrever este comentário e perguntei-me a mim mesma: “Porque raio não ouvi isto antes?!” hahahah! Acho que se não fosse a versão de David, nunca teria ouvido a original. Ambas são absolutamente brilhantes e a maestria necessária para conseguir tocar este tema, quer na guitarra, quer no violino é impressionante, quase deixam o ouvinte um pouco sem fôlego, no bom sentido claro. Confesso que fiquei sem mais adjectivos para descrever este tema, para além de ser um trabalho de génio e claro, tornou-se uma das minha preferidas do álbum.

I honestly didn’t know the original version of this song that belongs to “Deep Purple”, until I started writing this review and asked myself: “Why the hell didn’t I hear this before?!” hahahah! I believe that if it wasn’t for David’s version I would have never heard the original. Both of them are brilliant and the mastery required to play this song, either on guitar or on the violin is impressive, to the point where the listener is almost breathless, in a good way of course. I confess I ran out of adjectives to describe this song, apart from being a genius work and of course, it became one of my favorites in the album.

You’re The Inspiration

A versão original deste tema é da banda “Chicago” e apesar de não estar familiarizada com esta, o mesmo não acontece com a de David. Associo-a sempre ao facto de, em parte, ter sido por inspiração de David que me decidi a estudar música, a aprender a tocar um instrumento. Sempre disse que o gostaria de fazer, mas nunca se proporcionou e cheguei mesmo a pensar já seria tarde de mais para o fazer, dado já ser adulta. No entanto, há quase 5 anos, tudo isso mudou, decidi e percebi que, na realidade, nunca somos velhos demais, nem nunca é tarde para aprender. Tive a sorte de ter dois instrumentos à escolha – piano e violino – e de gostar de ambos, bem como encontrar uma professora facilmente. Posso dizer que foi das melhores decisões que tomei na minha vida, não digo que seja fácil, pois não é, lidar com a frustração pode ser um pesadelo, mas vale sempre a pena. Caso estejam a pensar qual dos instrumentos decidi aprender… bem, foi o violino.

The original version belongs to the band “Chicago” and although I’m not familiarized with it, the same can not be said about David’s version. I always associate it with the fact that it was David who inspired me, partly, to study music, to learn an instrument. I’ve always said to myself I wanted to do it, but never actually had the chance to do it, in fact, I even thought it would be too late to learn, since I was already an adult. However, almost 5 years ago, that changed and I decided and understood that, in reality, we’re never too old, nor it’s never too late to learn. I was lucky enough to had two instruments I could choose from – piano and violin – and liking both, as well as finding a teacher rather easily. I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I ever made, I’m not saying it’s easy, because it isn’t, dealing with frustration can be a real nightmare, but it’s always worth it. In case you’re wondering what instrument I choose… well, it was the violin.

“Rock Revolution” – A personal review – Part 3

Purple Rain

Como já referi anteriormente, todo esta álbum me traz memórias de infância/adolescência. Lembro-me muito bem quando ouvi falar de Prince a primeira vez, devia ter uns 6 ou 7 anos, estava de férias no sul de Espanha com os meus pais e uns amigos destes, quando uma noite, um desses amigos mencionou que aquela zona estava cheia de gente pois iria haver um concerto de Prince. Achei piada ao nome e perguntei quem era e porque se chamava assim, explicaram-me então que era o nome artístico e que era músico/cantor. Passado algum tempo ouvi então o tema “Purple Rain” e lembrei-me daquele episódio de férias, como acontece habitualmente quando o ouço. Prince era, na minha opinião, realmente um artista, não só com uma voz muito particular, como também era um excelente guitarrista. O solo de guitarra é brilhante na versão original, bem como o violino eléctrico na versão de David que, com seu toque pessoal, manteve a essência de Prince. Obrigada por mais uma boa memória!

As I mentioned before, this whole album brings back childhood memories. I remember well the first time I heard about Prince, I must have been 6 or 7 years old and I was on vacation in the south of Spain with my parents and some of their friends, when one night one of them mentioned there was a lot of people in that area because Prince was going to perform there. I thought the name was funny and asked who he was and why did he have that name, they explained that it was his artistic name and that he was a musician/singer. After some time I hear the song “Purple Rain” and remembered that vacation episode, as usually happens whenever I hear him. Prince was, in my opinion, truly an artist, not only had a particular voice he was also an excellent guitarist. The guitar solo in the original version is just brilliant, as well as David’s electric violin in his version which, with his personal touch, kept Prince’s essence. Thank you for another good memory!

Eye Of The Tiger

Adoro este tema! Apesar de não ser grande fã dos filmes “Rocky”, nunca me canso de a ouvir. Para mim sempre foi uma música inspiradora mas, acima de tudo, motivadora, provalmente porque a relaciono com os filmes, na medida em que resume um pouco a minha forma de viver. Se acreditarmos em nós, nos nossos sonhos e nos dedicarmos a segui-los, independentemente da opinião alheia, conseguimos realizá-los. Não é fácil e por vezes torna-se um caminho muito solitário, com alturas em que apetece desistir, mas no final, vale sempre a pena. A versão de David tem o dom de duplicar este efeito, uma vez que é instrumental, o violino substitui a letra da música mas de uma forma mais ampla, uma vez que há emoções que não se podem descrever por palavras.

I love this song! Although I’m not a big fan of the “Rocky” films, I never get tired of listening to it. For me it was always an inspiring song, but above all, it’s motivating, probably because I relate it to the films, in the sense it sums up a little the way I live my life. If we believe in ourselves, in our dreams and if we insist on pursuing them, no matter what other people’s opinion is, we can achieve everything. It’s not easy and sometimes it becomes a very lonely journey, when sometimes we just want to give up, but in the end, it’s always worth it. David’s version has the power to enhance that, because it’s instrumental, the violin replaces the lyrics but in a more broader form, because some emotions can not be described with words.

Fix You

Não me lembro de ouvir a original pertencente aos Coldplay, mas a versão de David ouço constantemente e de todas a vezes me faz sorrir e ao mesmo tempo ficar com lágrimas no olhos. Talvez porque algo ecoa cá dentro e que não consigo explicar, só sentir. A verdade é que há algo neste tema me “diz” que vai tudo correr bem, independentemente daquilo a que possamos estar a passar neste momento, há dias bons e dias menos bons e ajuda-nos a pegar naqueles pedaços de nós que por vezes estão partidos ou simplesmente espalhados e a juntá-los de novo, criando novamente um ser inteiro… é uma mensagem de esperança lindíssima.

I don’t really remember hearing the original version of this song, belonging to Coldplay, but I do hear David’s version all the time and every time I do it makes me smile, but at the same time my eyes always tear. Maybe it’s because something echoes inside that I can’t explain, just feel it. The truth is there is something in it that “says” that everything is going to be alright, no matter what we might be going through in our lives at this moment, there are good and bad days, and it helps us pick up those broken or scattered pieces of us and place them all together again, creating a whole being one more time… it’s a beautiful message of hope.

“Rock Revolution” – A personal review – Part 1

No passado dia 15, foi lançado o novo álbum de David, “Rock Revolution”. Depois de alguns dias a ouvi-lo (e de esperar quase uma semana pelo meu CD, lol) e, como já aconteceu anteriormente, irei escrever algumas linhas sobre o que penso ou sinto sobre o mesmo. É apenas uma opinião pessoal, da minha inteira responsabilidade e com a qual não pretendo obter absolutamente nada. Obviamente não vou comentar pormenores técnicos, nem me atreveria a tal, pois não possuo conhecimento suficiente para o fazer. Vou tentar não me alongar muito em cada tema, de modo a que não se torne demasiado aborrecido. Desde já agradeço a vossa leitura, espero que gostem! 🙂

David’s new album, “Rock Revolution”, was released on September 15th. After a few days of listening to it (and waiting for my CD for almost a week for my CD, lol) and like before, I’ll be writting a few words about what I think and feel about the said album. It’s only a personal opinion and my sole responsibility, from which I will earn absolutely nothing. I will not comment any technical details, obviously, I wouldn’t dare doing it, because I do not possess enough knowledge to do so. Also, I’ll try to keep it short to prevent it to become too boring. In the Air Tonight

Todo este álbum me traz boas memórias de quando era mais nova, algumas quando era ainda criança, outras já adolescente, pois algumas eram músicas que ouvia nessa época. No entanto, David e a sua banda obviamente, deram-lhes um novo fôlego, quase como que um upgrade para o século XXI, mas que mantém a sua essência original. O tema “In The Air Tonight”, original de Phill Collins, é um bom exemplo, embora goste da sua versão, pessoalmente prefiro a de David. É como um véu que nos venda durante demasiado tempo e que, de um momento para o outro, se desvanece e fica tudo claro, simples e mais leve. É isto que sinto quando ouço, uma sensação de leveza e de frescura…

This whole album brings back good memories of when I was younger, some when I was a child and others when I was a teenager, because I used to listen to some of them at the time. However, David and his band obviously, gave them a “new life”, almost like a 21st century upgrade, but keeping their original essence. The song “In The Air Tonight”, a Phill Collins original, is a good exemple and although I do like the original version, personally I prefer David’s. It’s like having a veil over your eyes for too long and, all of the sudden, it disappears and everything is clearer, simpler and lighter. It’s what I feel when I listen to it, a sense of lighteness and freshness…

Born In The USA

Bom, este tema não é fácil de comentar, pois apesar de conhecer a canção, não posso dizer que seja fã de Bruce Springsteen. No entanto, isso mudou um pouco quando ouvi esta versão ao vivo, há dois em Roma e me rendi a esta versão instrumental da mesma, seja pelos arranjos ou por não ter letra, ou pela junção das duas, o que é certo é que me transmite uma energia diferente e muito positiva que original não me transmite. É o que acontece quando se juntam 6 músicos brilhantes que, em conjunto, fizeram-me gostar de uma canção com a qual não me identificava. Obrigada!

Well, this song isn’t easy for me to comment, although I know the original version, I can’t say I’m a Bruce Springsteen’s fan. However, all that changed a little when I heard it live, two years ago in Rome and I surrendered myself to it, either because of the arrangements, or because of the fact it has no lyrics, or maybe because of both, what it matters is that it transmits me a different e very positive energie that the original one doesn’t. This is what happens when you put together 6 brilliant musicians that made me like a song I didn’t identify myself with. Thank you!

Stairway To Heaven

Tenho que confessar que é um dos meus temas preferidos (um de muitos). Conheço o original claro, o qual, apesar de já ter mais de 40 anos, continua a ser uma referência do Rock. Esta versão é simplesmente brilhante e um excelente tributo a uma grande banda, Led Zeppelin. Ao mesmo tempo que tem o toque pessoal de David e da banda, quase conseguimos “ouvir” a voz de Robert Plant no violino de David, conseguimos “ouvir” também a guitarra de Jimmy Page, um dos grandes guitarristas de todos os tempos. Mais do que as palavras, a música fala por si! Seria muito interessante ouvir Led Zepplin e David e a banda tocarem em conjunto, o resultado seria, sem dúvida, espectacular. Fica a sugestão 😉 !

I have to confess that this track is one of my (many) favorites. I do know the original version of course which, although it’s more than 40 years old, it still is a Rock reference. This version is absolutely brilliant and an excelent tribute to a great band, Led Zeppelin. At the same time it has David and the band’s touch, we can almost “hear” Robert Plant’s in David’s violin and also Jimmy Page’s guitar, one of the greatest guitarists of all time. More than words, the music speaks for itself! It would be really interesting to hear Led Zeppelin and David and the band playing together, the result would be, most definitely, amazing. Just a suggestion 😉 !
